CHE 110 Introduction to Organic Chemistry 4 credits

Fundamental concepts concerning the compounds of carbon are studied. Organic compounds are classed into families determined by the functional groups they contain. For each of these families the names, structures, preparations, reactions and uses are studied. Laboratory exercises consider the preparation of organic compounds, the chemical reactions they undergo, their physical properties and methods of identification. A brief study of biological compounds concludes the course. R (3 lecture hours and 3 laboratory hours)

Prerequisite: CHE 102 or permission of the instructor
